Faculty members at the School of Information Studies (iSchool) will be presenting a series of workshops this semester for undergraduate and master’s students to provide an introduction to the process and procedures involved in scientific research.
“These sessions are designed for students who are interested in working on research projects and may be hesitant about where to begin,” said Kevin Crowston, Associate Dean for Research and Distinguished Professor of Information Science at the iSchool.
“To help students get started, we’re offering this informal workshop series to introduce them to scientific research methods,” Crowston explained. “Not only will they learn about research, they’ll also be able to meet with the leading research-active faculty in the iSchool.”
Eleven workshops are planned, beginning this week and running until the end of April. All sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 PM in 117 Hinds Hall.

February 8 – Introduction to research (Kevin Crowston)
February 15 – Theory and research (Steve Sawyer)
February 22 – Research designs (Jason Dedrick)
March 1 – Research project design (Caroline Haythornthwaite)
March 8 – Data elicitation (Carsten Østerlund)
March 15 – Spring break week – no workshop
March 22 – Exploratory data analysis and visualizations (Jeff Hemsley)
March 29 – Quantitative data analysis (Daniel Acuna)
April 5 – Qualitative data analysis (Barbara Kwasnik)
April 12 – Ethnographic approaches (Bryan Semaan)
April 19 – Research disciplines (TBA)
April 26 – Publishing (TBA)
“It is not necessary for students to attend all sessions,” Crowston said, “however, the topics build on each other, so there will be benefit to attending them in order.”
No registration is required for workshop attendance. Optional readings will be offered on Blackboard.
