Vincent Scipione ’17 managed to earn three degrees in a little over four years. How exactly did he do it? We asked him a few questions to figure out just how obtainable this process is, and what life is like post-graduation.

Prior to Syracuse University, what degrees did you get and what was that process like?

I started my college career at Onondaga Community College (OCC) where I studied for three years and obtained two associate degrees: one in computer science and the other in computer forensics. Upon transferring to the iSchool, I studied for three semesters and completed the Information Management & Technology B.S. program in December 2017. All-in-all, I studied for four-and-a-half years and obtained three degrees.

How did you find a path in IM&T?

It was always my plan to continue my education to at least a bachelor’s degree, so this was simply the next step for me. Growing up just outside the Syracuse area made Syracuse University a prime choice based on location, but the fact that it had one of the top iSchools in the nation was icing on the cake.

What sparked your interest in the field of technology?

I’ve always been interested in technology from a young age. Classes offered throughout junior high and high school allowed me to solidify my decision to pursue a career in the field. Being able to solve problems and incorporate solutions that overall enrich our everyday lives sparked an interest in me.

Can you describe your current job?

I currently work at SIDEARM Sports as an IT Services Specialist. My duties range from assisting in the management of our infrastructure, launching client sites, and managing technology within the office. I started as an intern in January 2017 and recently transitioned to a full-time employee in January 2018.

What is it like to work full-time where you went to school?

I thoroughly enjoy the higher education atmosphere, so I really don’t mind going to work on campus. The nature of being a transfer student results in a lesser amount of time at the University versus a traditional student, so working in the iSchool is making up for that lost time.

Any advice for current iSchool students? How do you make the most of your education?

Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, whether big or small. Attending an information session turned into a full-time opportunity for me. Now is the easiest time to expand your network so always attend events and meetings, including new organizations! Constantly ask yourself, “Is there something more I can be doing to better myself?”, whether it be personally or professionally. Remember to utilize the resources available to you within the iSchool each step of the way, they are invaluable.
