A trio of School of Information Studies (iSchool) alumni were on the speaker list this weekend for the iSchool’s inaugural Graduate Seminar and Immersion Milestone event. The three-day event brought online and campus students, alumni, and local practitioners together to hear from iSchool faculty, alumni, and industry experts on a hot topic in the information field – the Internet of Things (IoT).

“The IoT is an emerging global phenomenon that has its roots in how technological innovation and convergence effects social structures at all levels,” explained iSchool Executive Professor of Practice and seminar organizer Scott Bernard. “People and machines have become increasingly interconnected in all aspects of life, and this has tremendous implications for how we work and play, as well as the quality and length of our lives.”

“This weekend immersion seminar explored a number of aspects of the IoT phenomenon and provided an opportunity for students, practitioners, alumni, and researchers to interact on current issues in these areas,” said Bernard.

iSchool alumni joining the speaker lineup were Sam Edelstein ’07 G’15, Kim Rose G’99, and Megan Snyder ’13.

Edelstein is Chief Data Officer for the City of Syracuse, and presented on Big Data and the IoT. Rose serves as Chief Information Officer for Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, and her presentation focused on how hospitals are embracing IoT devices. Snyder is a Cybersecurity Consultant at Accenture, her presentation was entitled, “The Internet of Things is a Cybersecurity Nightmare.”

In addition to formal presentations, seminar attendees were also able to network and share ideas at lunch events, interest tables, and hear from faculty experts during iTalk sessions.

Over 160 graduate students attended the weekend seminar.
