The School of Information Studies (iSchool) is launching a job shadow program for students this fall, and is seeking alumni hosts.
The new program will pair undergraduate students with alumni to gain an understanding of a given career path, industry, and/or job function. Alumni volunteers can host students at their organization for a full-day or half-day slot during the week of January 4th, 2016.
“Our alumni probably remember what it was like to be a student without any clear idea of what they wanted to do with their degree,” said Barbara Settel, executive director of alumni relations at the iSchool. “And even when students have an inkling of some career possibilities, seeing people in their work environments can give them a better idea of what that job is like day-to-day. With the job shadow program, we hope to provide an opportunity for our successful alumni to share their experience with students firsthand.”
“We think this will be a great opportunity for alumni and students alike,” said Meredith Tornabene, associate director of the iSchool’s Career Center. “Students will get the chance to clarify their career goals, network with iSchool alumni in a field they’re interested in, and observe day-to-day business operations, while alumni and their organizations likewise have the opportunity to connect with iSchool students and build awareness of the culture and opportunities available in their field.”
Alumni who are interested in signing up to host a student in January can visit the job shadow program’s website for details and submit a short profile and application.
Applications for alumni participation in the program are due by October 16, and student matches will be assigned by November 30.
Students interested in shadowing an alumnus will receive more information about the program and specific shadow opportunities from the iSchool’s Career Center in late October.
