Career Overview
More than ever, professionals are needed in the IT field, and despite the economic downturn, the information management and technology industry continues to hire, adding jobs in information systems design and IT management and consulting services, among others. We anticipate this year our students will, as always, experience an exceptional job placement rate and high starting salary upon graduation.
Your degree from the iSchool at Syracuse University will complement a variety of careers, giving you the freedom to choose the industry that fits you best. Many of our students begin their careers as consultants, web designers and developers, project managers, network administrators, librarians, school media specialists, and database programmers.
From the moment that students arrive on campus, iSchool faculty and staff are ready to help them achieve success in class and in their careers beyond campus. The iSchool’s Office of Employer Relations works with the University’s Center for Career Services to offer support to students seeking internships and employment. These services range from resume-writing and interviewing tips to hosting internship, career fairs, and employee recruitment events.
Faculty members are very involved in the internship process and serve as supervisors of students’ internships. This way, a faculty member can ensure that the internship experience complements the student’s classroom learning and builds professional skills needed to succeed in the workplace. The faculty members also act as liaisons to these companies, and build strong and lasting relationships that keep our curriculum anchored in current issues and our students in the pipeline for jobs and internships. This faculty-driven employer relations model has increased company visits to the iSchool 300 percent in the past year.
In combination with University resources, every iSchool student can be linked up with alumni mentors who can help students in transitioning to the working world and in developing their professional network.
All Syracuse students have access to:
* OrangeLink, a web-accessible database with job, internships, and event listings as well as other employment resources
* Mentor@SU, a program that links current students with alumni volunteers to explore career opportunities, job shadow, and build connections to other working professionals in your field.
NOTE: These services are also available to distance learning students. These students should e-mail or schedule telephone appointments with your faculty advisor or Kathy Benjamin (kabenjam@syr.edu) in the Student Services Office.
