The November/December 2012 issue of Emergency Management magazine features the Wireless Grids Lab’s iDAWG – Intelligent Deployable Augmented Wireless Gateway technology.
In an article covering emerging innovation, the iDAWG is highlighted for its ability to provide interoperable communications channels between many different first-responder agencies at disaster scenes.
The iDAWG works on a new type of software application, called edgeware. Through the lab’s cognitive radio interfaces and the abilities of the edgeware software, iDAWG is intended to integrate with the Federal Emergency Management Association’s (FEMA) Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). IPAWS is the communication system used by most police and fire agencies and emergency management responders.
“The involvement of university researchers with practitioners and the public is a fairly new collaborative arrangement that brings new broader insights to the issues and creates actual solutions for incorporating this new way of operating and managing crises,” Joe Treglia, assistant director of the Wireless Grids Lab, said in the article.
The iDAWG initiative is made possible with funding from the National Science Foundation’s Partnerships for Innovation program.
