Earlier today, the campus community learned about the untimely passing of one of our own students in an automobile accident in New Jersey.

Many of you knew Brianna Herrera, a senior in the School of Information Studies (iSchool). This is a sad day for everyone – her family, her friends, our school, and the University as a whole. Brianna was an active member of our iSchool community, and she will be deeply missed.

Please know the following services are available at the University to students, faculty, and staff during this terrible time:

  • Students seeking support can contact the Counseling Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 315-443-4715. Additional services are provided by the Office of Student Assistance, Monday through Friday, by calling 315-443-4357.
  • For faculty and staff, assistance is available through Carebridge, the University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. Trained clinicians are available by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be reached at 800-437-0911.

Resources will also be available at the iSchool. Shannon Marrero and Jordan Shannon, undergraduate counselors, will be available next week in the Student Services Office – 114 Hinds Hall. You can contact Shannon at smarch@syr.edu, or Jordan at jpshanno@syr.edu, or stop into the office from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Please know that you can also contact Hendricks Chapel at 315-443-2901. The main chapel is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for prayer and reflection. A vigil is planned at Hendricks for 7:00 p.m. tonight, organized by her sorority, Sigma Delta Tau.

I know the coming days and weeks will be tough for all of us as we mourn Brianna’s passing. Please don’t hesitate to contact me (liddy@syr.edu) if I can be of any assistance to you during this difficult time.
