The Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) is pleased to announce that Dr. Barbara K. Stripling will be joining the iSchool as a Professor of Practice beginning January 1, 2012.

For the past six years, Stripling served as the Director of Library Services for New York City’s Department of Education, and has been an adjunct professor for the iSchool since 2007.  She also has served in a variety of roles with public school libraries in Arkansas, North Carolina, New York, and Tennessee. Stripling received her Doctorate of Professional Studies from the Syracuse iSchool this year, and holds an Ed.S. from the University of Arkansas. She also received her Master’s in Education from the University of Arkansas, an M.A. in Communications and Theatre from the University of Colorado, and a B.A. in Speech and Drama from Stanford University.

“This is an exciting time to be a school librarian and an even more exciting time to be an educator of school librarians,” Stripling said.  “The education world is changing with the advent of new national standards that place prime emphasis on the thinking skills involved in reading informational text and conducting research.”

In her new role, Stripling will instruct graduate students in the Masters of Library & Information Science (MLIS) program as well as the school media specialization. Her experience in the field will provide a unique professional perspective that will be of great benefit to many students.

“I am thrilled to be welcoming Barbara to the iSchool,” Dean Elizabeth D. Liddy said. “Given her superior capabilities and experience, she will be a tremendous asset to the MLIS program, leading us to the next era of excellence for the iSchool.  I very much look forward to working with her.”
