The Ruth Ivor Foundation of New York City has donated $25,000 to support the Syracuse University School of Information Studies’ ongoing information innovation initiatives, with opportunities for educating professionals who understand the power of blogging and social networking and who implement these outlets to share messages and inform society.
“This funding will provide support for the brightest, most interdisciplinary, and most forward-thinking students as they focus their talents on professional blogging and employing social media to share news,” said iSchool Dean Elizabeth D. Liddy. “Our signature courses that draw upon the iSchool’s social media, web development, library science, and information technology expertise prepare students with the much-needed information processing and technology grounding that blogging and other social outlets require. We are grateful for the Ruth Ivor Foundation’s support of these initiatives that are so critical in preparing a 21st century professional.”
The gift will fund:
- A one-week course on blogging this summer. Taught by sports blogger SU alumnus Sean Keeley ’00, (www.nunesmagician.com) and SBNation.com editor, the course will teach students what it takes to create an effective and influential blog. - Scholarships for students who enroll in iSchool social media courses, including Social Media in the Enterprise, Social Media for the Music Industry, Social Networking in Libraries, and Social Web Technologies.
- A competition to send students to the Knight News Challenge, a contest that funds new ways to digitally inform communities. Participants find ways to share news in the public interest using open-source digital technologies that fit within one of four areas: mobile, authenticity, sustainability, and community.
