School of Information Studies (iSchool) professor Jennifer Stromer-Galley will join a panel of media experts for a discussion on the proliferation of fake news in the digital era.

Hosted by Social Media Breakfast Syracuse and the Syracuse Press Club, the panel discussion will be moderated by Roy Gutterman, associate professor and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech at the Newhouse School of Public Communications, and will feature additional panelists Sarah Hall, editor of the Eagle Star-Review and the Baldwinsville Messenger, and Jason Zenor, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies at SUNY Oswego.

Stromer-Galley, who is also director of the iSchool’s Center for Computational and Data Sciences, is an expert on human interaction through digital media, and has written extensively about political uses of the Internet for governance and for campaigning. During the 2016 presidential election, she and her team conducted a computational journalism project, Illuminating 2016, that tracked social media conversations of all presidential candidates.

In December, she penned an essay for The Conversation, addressing the issues around fake news, and offered three ways that Facebook could address the problem of fake news without resorting to censorship.

The panel discussion is free and open to the public. It will be held at 7:30 AM on Thursday, January 26 at the OneGroup Center, 706 North Clinton Street, in Syracuse. RSVPs are requested online at: smbsyracuse51.splashthat.com.
