Assistant Professor of Practice Barbara Stripling has received the 2012 New York State School Library System Association’s Distinguished Service Award.
The award is given to a professional who has made an outstanding contribution to school librarianship and to the Association. Criteria considered include leadership, professional service, information sharing, collaboration and quaility programs.
Stripling joined the faculty at the School of Information Studies (iSchool) in January, after serving for six years as Director of Library Services for New York City’s Department of Education. She had also served as an adjunct professor for the iSchool since 2007.
During the course of her work for the Department of Education, Stripling was instrumental in developing and implementing a clear vision of library services. Under her leadership, the Office of Library Services developed a librarian’s handbook, benchmark skills with grade-level assessments, a K-12 Information fluency continuum, and an alignment of the Common Core learning standards and Information Fluency Continuum, among other professional tools.
Stripling quoted Andrew Carnegie during her award acceptance speech, “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision.” She continued, “We [School Library Systems] have a strong vision for school libraries in New York and we are working together to bring that vision into reality. Everything we have accomplished has been a result of our teamwork.”
