Syracuse University students and alumni who are located in the New York City metro area will be able to obtain a social media checkup and assessment of their online presence throughout the day on Tuesday, March 11.

Kelly Lux, Director of Social Media at the School of Information Studies (iSchool), will be hosting a full day of social media checkup sessions then, during a visit to coincide with the Generation Orange event, “Syracuse Alumni at NYC’s Hottest Startups.”

Appointments are necessary and can be scheduled in advance. Lux will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the sessions, which will be conducted at Syracuse University's Lubin House, 11 East 61st Street in Manhattan. Available on a first-come, first-served basis, the checkups are designed tohelp students and alumni sharpen their social media presences for potential employers. Lux will evaluate individuals' online accounts and make recommendations for changes and improvements.

Having an objective review of your online social media presence is important for job-seekers and professionals, Lux said, because company recruiters and executives regularly use LinkedIn to find and connect with people they hear from or may want to hire. “Anyone you reach out to and try to network with is going to look up your profile on LinkedIn right away,” she said, “so having appropriate content and interactions on social media profiles is key to creating good initial business impressions.”

Lux also encourages job-seekers to evaluate what they post online and how it can be viewed while they are conducting a job search. “It's always good to get a second eye, and an objective one, on your profiles,” Lux added. “Most people use social networks on a very surface basis, and there are so many beneficial ways they may be missing out on the benefits of social networking.” The social media checkup sessions have been offered to SU and iSchool students on campus throughout the spring semester, Lux said, and they have proven very popular.

Lux joined the iSchool in 2010 as its online community and relationship manager, and was named director of social media in 2013. She also is the executive editor of the School's official online blog, Information Space, and is an adjunct professor at the iSchool, co-teaching #CMGRClass (“Social Media and Online Community Management”). She also co-founded and co-hosts the long-running weekly Twitter chat known as #CMGRChat (Community Manager chat), a space for online community managers from across the country to share knowledge and resources while building community.
