Peggy Garvin G’86 received the 2011 Dow Jones Leadership Award at the Special Libraries Association (SLA) annual conference in June.
Garvin, who received her M.S. in Library and Information Science from the School of Information Studies (iSchool), is the 14th recipient of this award. The award honors an SLA member who leads others by exemplifying professional and personal competencies.
“At Dow Jones, we view info pros as super heroes – people who skillfully manage the difficult and critical role of helping organizations effectively use complex, global information,” said Scott Schulman, president of corporate markets for Dow Jones.
Initially attracted to the field of information studies because she liked the flexibility that the degree offered, Garvin said, “I like change, and I couldn’t confine myself to one skill set for my career. Syracuse was the first school that understood that, and the iSchool taught me skills that could be used in different areas. Learning the broad range of basic principals of information studies has really helped me change with the world of information, the market and the technology.”
Garvin’s company, Garvin Information Consulting, helps Washington D.C. area professionals learn workplace information skills. She teaches her clients how to find the information they need and how to use it effectively. Concentrating on government information, she shows her clients how to uncover regulations, track legislation and improve their research skills.
In addition to her consulting business, Garvin also shares her ideas in books and magazine columns, including Government Online, which she writes for Searcher Magazine.
