Chasing Dreams: My Journey as an International Student at Syracuse
Moving to Syracuse for my master’s program has been a journey full of anticipation, excitement, and a few inevitable challenges. As someone who’s lived in one place in India for years, this change felt both thrilling and daunting. From packing up my life to setting foot in a new country, every step of the way has been a whirlwind of emotions and experiences.
The Decision to Move
When I decided to pursue my Master’s in Applied Data Science, I knew I wanted a program that would challenge me and offer significant growth opportunities. Syracuse University, with its renowned programs and strong alumni network, felt like the perfect fit. Another factor in my decision was my sister—an alumna of Syracuse—who has been a major inspiration. Watching her journey to becoming a Data Engineer at Adobe gave me the confidence that Syracuse could offer me the same opportunities for growth and success.
Arriving in Syracuse
Syracuse greeted me with its chilly breeze and a sense of fresh beginnings. Moving into my apartment, I instantly felt a mix of independence and responsibility. One of the most rewarding aspects of this experience has been living with new people from diverse backgrounds. Sharing an apartment has become a cherished routine filled with laughter, late-night study sessions, and learning to cook together. From experimenting with traditional Indian dishes to discovering new recipes from my roommates, these moments have forged strong bonds among us.
We often help each other out, whether it’s sharing study tips, cooking meals during hectic weeks, or simply being there to unwind after a long day. This sense of camaraderie has made adjusting to life in a new country feel much less daunting. It’s heartwarming to know that, even in moments of homesickness, we have each other to lean on.
On-Campus Life
One of the highlights has been exploring the campus itself. Syracuse University’s iSchool, where I’ll be spending most of my time, is a hub of innovation. I’ve been taking courses like Introduction to Data Science and Quantitative Reasoning for Data Science and meeting professors like Christopher Dunham and Kevin Crowston, who are pioneers in data analytics and machine learning.
Syracuse has some of the best campus facilities I’ve experienced. The Bird Library quickly became one of my favorite spots on campus, offering both quiet study areas and collaborative spaces for group projects. The historic Carnegie Library, with its peaceful, academic atmosphere, is perfect for focused study sessions.
To stay active, I regularly visit the Barnes Center at The Arch, a state-of-the-art fitness facility equipped with a gym, indoor track, rock climbing wall, and more. I also enjoy participating in group fitness sessions, which are a great way to de-stress, stay healthy, and meet other students with similar interests.
One of the things that makes Syracuse stand out is its dedication to building a vibrant, inclusive community. The campus is buzzing with activities, and as part of the Orange After Dark series, I’ve attended late-night events that helped me unwind and make new friends. These events, ranging from movie nights to interactive games, provide a fun and relaxed atmosphere where students can socialize and build connections.
Professional Development and Networking
Syracuse offers endless opportunities to engage in professional growth, and I’ve been taking full advantage of the resources available. I’ve participated in career services workshops that have helped me sharpen my resume and improve my interviewing skills. The recently concluded LinkedIn Week offered insights into building a strong online professional presence, and I found the sessions on personal branding and networking particularly helpful.
One of the standout experiences for me was the school network fair, which allowed me to interact directly with potential employers and industry experts. It was an eye-opening experience, providing a chance to make valuable connections and learn more about what various companies are looking for in candidates. These events not only help build professional networks but also prepare us for life after graduation.
The alumni network at Syracuse is a powerful resource. Just spotting a fellow Syracuse graduate can spark an instant connection. Many alumni are eager to help current students by offering insights into industry standards, conducting resume reviews, and sharing what’s new with the interview process. I recently connected with an alum who works in data science, and he graciously reviewed my resume and provided tips on what hiring managers are currently looking for. This support has been incredibly valuable as I prepare for my career.
On top of these opportunities, I’ve been fortunate to be part of iConsult, a program that allows students to work on real-world projects and gain hands-on experience. This has been a great way to apply classroom knowledge to actual business problems while also networking with professionals.
Working on Campus
Another exciting part of my journey has been the opportunity to work as a Graduate Admission Assistant, which has been a rewarding experience. Not only does this role help me financially, but it also allows me to engage more deeply with the university community. Additionally, I’ve taken on shifts with Dome catering, providing an inside look at the vibrant sports culture here at Syracuse. Balancing work and studies has taught me time management and how to stay organized under pressure, while also connecting me with a variety of people across campus.
Looking Ahead
Syracuse University is more than just a place to earn a degree; it’s a place where I’ve found a supportive community, opportunities for personal and professional growth, and a wealth of experiences that I’ll carry with me long after I graduate. From attending career services workshops and engaging with the alumni network, working as a school employee, and enjoying the many campus facilities, I’ve already started to build memories and connections that will last a lifetime.
I’m excited to see what the future holds, and I’m proud to be part of such a welcoming and dynamic university. Here’s to embracing every moment of this journey and making the most of my time at Syracuse!
