Research
My research focuses on the relationship between emergent media technology, language, law, and policy from an intersectional feminist perspective. I employ qualitative research methods including ethnographic methods, interviewing, focus groups, and discourse analysis sometimes in combination with larger scale methods on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram. I am currently utilizing critical cultural theory in my work on information seeking and search. I recently published a book on the policy of Net Neutrality, with my co-author Dr. Alison Novak of Rowan University, Network Neutrality and Digital Dialogic Communication: How Public, Private and Government Forces Shape Internet Policy, available from Routledge.
Teaching
In my teaching strategies I emphasize that social problems cannot be solved with technology alone and require a socio-technical response. I focus on human interaction with digital technologies, and encourage students to question the socio-technical culture that leads to particular design choices. I have taught in the following areas:
