An informational open house is planned at the School of Information Studies (iSchool) on Thursday in participation with the national celebration of Data Innovation Day.
The open house is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. at the ICE Box, the collaborative space on the second floor of Hinds Hall.
Students and staff at the University, as well as the general public, are welcome to stop by to obtain information about the School’s 15-credit Certificate of Advanced Study in data science, its ongoing data science massive online open course (MOOC), and to learn about a wide range of data science career opportunities. Information also will be available about specific data science curriculum courses, possible scholarship opportunities, and the free e-book on data science, written by iSchool Professor and Senior Associate Dean Jeffrey Stanton. Refreshments of brownies, hot cocoa and coffee will be served.
The event presents an excellent opportunity in an informal setting to obtain information about the data field, the school’s data offerings, and how data skills are being put to use in a variety of career fields, according to Erin Bartolo, data science program manager at the iSchool. “This is an exciting time to be thinking about working with data, regardless of its complexity, because there really is a shift toward working with data in many different career fields, as well as a growing data community,” she noted.
Nationally, the Center for Data Innovation is hosting a Data Innovation Day. Information about the awareness activities taking place in Washington D.C. on January 23, and more detailed information about the field of data science, is available at this site.
