School of Information Studies (iSchool) Associate Professor of Practice Jill Hurst-Wahl, and Data Science Program Manager Erin Bartolo will be guests on a virtual panel discussion that examines how to leverage Big Data for teaching and learning.

Hosted by the New Media Consortium (NMC), the panel will take place as a Google Hangout and live YoutTube broadcast on Wednesday, November 13 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Eastern time.

The panel will address issues such as how educators can use Big Data to personalize student learning experiences and boost engagement across education sectors; and will also outline the challenges that educators face in dealing with Big Data topics.

Hurst-Wahl's role at the iSchool’s is to provide guidance on the School’s Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Data Science. She has a background in information technology and worked with large data sets, before they received the moniker of “Big Data.”  She currently serves on the USNY Technology Policy and Practices Council.

In Bartolo’s role at the School. she addresses for-profit and not-for-profit organizations on skills needed to work in the emerging data science field, as well as advising prospective and current students on data science education.

The panel is part of NMC’s On the Horizon series, which examines and identifies the impact of emerging technologies in education. International panels of experts have been convened across all education sectors to address the issues poised to significantly impact teaching and learning at all levels.
