The application period for two School of Information Studies-sponsored student immersion trip programs is now open, continuing through November 22.
Spring Break in Silicon Valley (SBinSV) and Entretech NYC are programs designed to provide students with a first-hand look at the companies, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and way of life in California’s Silicon Valley or the New York City startup scene. The programs, hosted by the School of Information Studies, are open to students from all majors and in all schools and colleges at Syracuse University and the area.
Spring Break in Silicon Valley
“SBinSV” focuses on face-to-face interactions with representatives at site visits to incubators, startup companies, and educational institutions like Stanford University. Previous SBinSV trips have visited LinkedIn, Facebook, Google, Twitter, Evernote, Shasta Ventures, Klout, eBay, and Microsoft. The Spring Break in Silicon Valley trip takes place in 2014 from March 9 to 14.
EntreTech NYC
This trip lets students immerse themselves in the NYC digital landscape for a week. The group visits and has discussions with startup company founders and employees, SU and iSchool alumni, and investors in Manhattan. Past trips have included visits to places such as Google NYC, foursquare, Gilt Groupe, MLB.com, Constant Contact, Tumblr, HuffPost Live, and Arkadium. EntreTech NYC takes place May 12-16 , 2014.
Application Procedures
Both programs are competitive-admission based, and openings for the immersion experiences are limited. To be considered for admission, students need to have a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. and must be in good standing. In addition, emphasis is being placed on Scholarship in Action as a criteria for admission. After the application period ends, applications will be reviewed and admission determinations made.
The cost of the trip is $500 per student. The trips must be taken as a credit-bearing course.
