They entered the School of Information Studies several semesters ago, coming to a place where the promise was this: “To Expand Human Capabilities Through Information,” the mission statement of the iSchool.

They spent days and weeks attending classes, seminars, labs, and social events, all organized within the framework of the iSchool’s values: “Inquiry, Individuality, Diversity, Adaptability, Unity and Continuity.”

And according to Dean Elizabeth D. Liddy, in her remarks at the 2013 Convocation, the  milestone of graduation marked the culmination of the lessons ingrained, an array of beginnings with those values instilled, and many new forays into individual and collective objectives in fulfillment of the iSchool’s goal:  “Transforming the Information Field Through Leadership in Research, Development, and Education.”

At convocation on May 11th, Dean Liddy told the iSchool’s 2013 graduates that now is a precipitous moment to be graduating with a degree in information, because “the rest of the world is recognizing the value of the information field, and that value is increasing dramatically every day.”

She wished the graduates “the best of luck in what we all know will be tremendously rewarding in information lives,” and reminded them to think about “extending yourself beyond the use of your highly-honed skills for you own goals. Discover how you can put this powerful expertise to use in assisting those less fortunate than you through the work of many amazing organizations. Your ability to contribute to those other than yourselves will also be fulfilling the vision of the iSchool.”

The group starting their journeys on that path, as Class of 2013 iSchool graduates, were accorded 513 degrees, grouped as these academic credentials.
