Registration is about to begin for a spring study workshop for the Project Management Institute’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification exam.

The School of Information Studies (iSchool) hosted study sessions start Thursday, February 21. They meet weekly through Thursday, April 11, except for Spring Break week. The sessions are held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the Katzer Collaboratory, Room 347, Hinds Hall.  Enrollment can be completed online at the PMI-Syracuse website: pmi-syracuse.org.

The iSchool is again offering the option of distance-learning enrollment for students who have scheduling conflicts or who wish to participate from off-campus locations. In the distance format, participants view pre-recorded videos of the workshop sessions, accessing them online.

The exam preparation workshop is designed for students and alumni who have completed a semester project management course. “It is ideal for participants who want to have step-by-step guidance in preparing for the PMI certification exams, and a progressive approach to reaching the certification goal within a short timeframe,” noted iSchool Professor of Practice Arthur Thomas. He said the workshop “will assist students with helpful hints, priorities for study, techniques to ensure they remember essential information, and added confidence through the experience of the certified project management professionals leading the sessions.”

The CAPM Certification, offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI), is for students and members of project teams who do not have the required experience to qualify for the PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, but who want to show that they have the necessary standard knowledge about the project management discipline.

The PMI exams for both CAPM and PMP will be changing after June 30, however. Thomas said that the spring workshop will cover material related only to the current CAPM exam, so students who take this workshop will want to be sure that they take the certification exam by June 30. Otherwise, plans are to offer a revised workshop in the fall of 2013 to accommodate the new exams.

There is a new pricing structure this semester. The $149 cost includes an exam study guide, the PMBOK reference book, memberships in both National and local Syracuse Chapter of PMI, and the workshop fee.  Students who already are members of PMI can receive a discounted fee.
