Dennis Crowley, Syracuse University alum and co-founder of the location based social network Foursquare, will be delivering the 2011 convocation address at the SU School of Information Studies (iSchool) May, 14, 2011.
“We are thrilled to have such a distinguished alum speaking to our graduates,” said iSchool Dean Elizabeth Liddy. “As an information innovator, he is a source of inspiration for many of our students, some of whom are starting their own businesses and others who are entering the workforce ready to take on challenges with developing and emerging technologies.”
Crowley graduated from SU in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, with a minor in Information Management Technology from the iSchool. While attending NYU in 2003, he co-founded Dodgeball, a mobile social networking application purchased by Google in 2005, the same year MIT’s Technology Review named him one of the “Top 35 Innovators Under 35.”
Crowley’s latest project, Foursquare, launched at South by Southwest in 2009, allowing its now more than 8 million users to check-in at businesses and venues to let friends know where they are. The service had more than half a billion check-ins in the last year.
