This fall, the School of Information Studies (iSchool) is offering Tools and Techniques for Teaching Online, a 10-week online course aimed at preparing faculty to effectively design and facilitate online courses.

Participants will explore topics in online instruction, including course organization, online communication and discussion facilitation, synchronous and asynchronous learning environments, assessment, and Universal Design for Learning. These concepts will be complimented by overviews of course technology including the Blackboard learning management system and other supplemental technologies useful for teaching online. The primary project will be the development of an actual online course which will be ready to launch at the completion of the semester.

Associate Professor Scott Nicholson and iSchool Director of Instructional Design Peggy Brown, with 20 years of experience in online education between them, will facilitate the course. Guests from across campus with will join the discussion to provide a broad view of the resources available to support online education at Syracuse University, and to facilitate connections among those interested in teaching online.

The 2-credit graduate level course will be hosted on the Syracuse University Blackboard 9 system and will be asynchronous with the exception of a face-to-face orientation session on Friday September 10 and a synchronous online session in Adobe Connect midway through the semester. The course begins on 9/10/10 and runs for 10 weeks. Remitted tuition benefits apply. Interested faculty should visit the course information page for registration instructions: https://ischool.syr.edu/facstaff/resources/teachonline.aspx

Online Learning at the iSchool
The School of Information studies has been offering high-quality graduate level online and distance education since 1993. Each of our graduate degrees can be completed online with limited residency requirements, over 250 of the iSchool’s graduate students are online learners, and each semester 40-50% of the graduate courses offered by the iSchool are taught online. The concept for this course emerged from the activities of the school’s 2009 Task Force on the Future of Online Education, including the fall 2009 campus-wide Online Pedagogy Workshop.
