This year’s SU Showcase, restructured and focused on the theme of sustainability, is seeking student fellows to present their academic work during the upcoming April 19 event. Open to all students at Syracuse University and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Showcase fellows may be self-nominated or nominated by a professor, and if chosen will have the opportunity to highlight their sustainability-related class project.

“Sustainability” is the SU Showcase theme this year to recognize the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Steve Parks, director of SU Showcase and associate professor of writing and rhetoric in The College of Arts and Sciences, also wants SU Showcase to highlight how various sustainability topics, such as global warming, environmentalism and green jobs are being addressed within different academic programs.

“Students are pursuing a lot of interesting and meaningful sustainability projects across campus that don’t always get recognized outside of the classroom,” Parks said. “Structuring SU Showcase to focus on the unique ways that sustainability applies to all areas of study here will create a very positive learning experience.”

The day-long SU Showcase event, coordinated through the University Soling Program, will revolve around the featured SU Showcase fellow presentations, student poster sessions and other events on the Quad. Other SU Showcase activities scheduled include entertainment in Hendricks Chapel, open classrooms across campus, a lecture by “Don’t Be Such a Scientist” author Randy Olson, visits by local high school students, and opportunities for the campus to weigh in on how best to pursue sustainability. More information, including a detailed schedule of activities, will be announced shortly.

Nominations for SU Showcase fellows may be made by completing a short form at the SU Showcase website, http://sushowcase.syr.edu, or by e-mailing Parks at sjparks@syr.edu. SU Showcase representatives from the nominated student’s college will review the nominated work and decide whether the student will be invited to present at SU Showcase.
