Overview

Dr. Tyson Brooks works for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and an Adjunct Professor at the iSchool. Dr. Brooks is responsible for information security, security engineering and cyber-assurance activities leveraging various data sources to identify systemic and/or critical misconfigurations, vulnerabilities, and unresolved threats to U.S. DoD classified networks.

Dr. Brooks has lead cyber teams in performing computer network operations/exploitation (CNO/CNE), analysis and defense operations for securing top secret and highly classified computer systems and networks in Maryland and recently in Oahu, Hawaii. Dr. Brooks lead information assurance operations (IAO) to conduct threat-informed risk assessments and full-scope penetration tests including physical, network, radio frequency (RF) and social engineering components to help identify weaknesses in critical systems/networks to secure U.S. DoD intellectual property, networks and sensitive data against a variety of complex threats. Furthermore, Dr. Brooks leads “hunt exercises” using threat intelligence, analysis of anomalous log data and results of brainstorming sessions to detect and eradicate threat actors on U.S. DoD networks. Dr. Brooks also performs information technology security research to remain current on emerging technology trends and develops exploits for disclosed and undisclosed vulnerabilities by applying expertise in adversary/stakeholder emulations models, techniques and other risk, value and decision support techniques.

As a published author and international speaker, Dr. Brooks holds a doctorate in Information Management with a focus on Information Security from Syracuse University; a master’s degree in Information and Telecommunications Systems from Johns Hopkins University; a master’s degree in Business Administration from Thomas More College and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Management from Kentucky State University. Furthermore, Dr. Brooks holds the following professional certifications: Security+, Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Ethical Hacker (C|EH), Certified Network Defense Architect (C|NDA), Certified Enterprise Architect (CEA),Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Information Security Management (ISM), Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v.3.

Dr. Brooks is a member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), the International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2), the Information System Security Association (ISSA) and is a Senior Member of IEEE. Additionally, Dr. Brooks is the founder/Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Internet of Things and Cyber-Assurance and is an associate editor for IEEE Access, the Journal of Enterprise Architecture, the International Journal of Cloud Computing and Services Science (IJ-CLOSER), the International Journal of Information and Network Security (IJINS) and is a reviewer for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IoT-J).
