Mark Andrew Borte
#239 (Adjunct Office) Hinds Hall
As a graduate of the iSchool (M.S. in Telecommunications and Network Management & C.A. S. in Information Systems and Telecommunications Management), I am proud to now be an iSchool faculty member. Drawing on my professional experience with building and operating service provider fiber optic networks, my background and skills align well with the iSchool’s mission to connect people, information and technology. I also possess a B.S. degree in Telecommunications from the State University of New York Institute of Technology and I hold more that (20) professional certifications to include PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP), the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL v3) certification and many telecommunications manufacturer and technology specific certifications. Prior to teaching at Syracuse University, I taught fiber optic networking at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute and a variety of telecom and information technology courses at SUNY OCC to students participating in Verizon’s NextStep program.
With so many great instructors in the iSchool, why should you choose to take a class with me? Above and beyond the subject matter, I focus on personal and professional development that will establish the skills and habits you need to launch your career and live your best life. You will sense my gratitude, excitement for life and genuine desire to spend my time with you in the classroom. My classes are filled with energy and I hope will leave you inspired and motivated to achieve your dreams. This approach has proven successful for me and in 2017 I was honored to have been selected by the students as the iSchool part-time professor of the year.
In my free time, I love to spend time with my wife and three daughters and I particularly enjoy the times we travel which gives us the opportunity to experience new things together and create lifelong memories. I also enjoy Syracuse basketball, playing card games, boating and golfing.
Over the past 25 years, I have primarily worked for start-up organizations to build and operate fiber optic networks throughout New York State. I currently serve as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) where I oversee the daily operations of a carrier-class fiber optic network bringing state-of-the-art optical transmission services to other service providers and large enterprise customers in the under-served areas of New York State. My subject matter expertise is in fiber optic transmission, service provider operations, service delivery and project management.
As a Senior Adjunct Professor, I feel it is my responsibility to bring “real life” experience to the classroom. In fact, I like to think of myself as part professor, part professional mentor and part motivational speaker. My current list of courses include:
- IST345 Managing Information Systems Projects (Undergraduate)
- IST645 Managing Information Systems Projects (Graduate)
- IST623 Introduction to Information Security
- IST754 Capstone Course in Enterprise Data Systems
In addition, I also work closely with the iSchool Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) to assist in providing other iSchool faculty the resources that they need to be successful in the classroom.
Beyond time spent in the classroom and with the Faculty Center, it is not uncommon for me to be at the iSchool meeting with students to review resumes, conduct mock interviews or to support students in various other ways. Seeing the excitement of a secured internship or permanent position is one of the greatest rewards of my work.
