Throughout her career, Jill Hurst-Wahl has blended library science, information technology and entrepreneurship. During her career, Jill has:
- worked in information technology as a trainer and a programmer/analyst.
- managed two corporate libraries.
- started her own consulting practice.
Her current areas of interests include copyright, innovation, and the future of the profession.
Besides being an avid blogger, Jill is a frequent author and speaker. Jill is currently a member of the USNY Technology Policy and Practice Council (2009 to present) and a member of the Onondaga County Public Library Board of Trustees (Dec. 2016 to present). She is a former member of the Special Libraries Association Board of Directors (2011-2013) and of the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries (2007-2012).
Jill was the director of the SU iSchool MSLIS program from 2012-2017, including its specialization in School Media (2013-2017). During her tenure as program director, the MSLIS program had its ALA accreditation review and was received continued accreditation until 2022.
In 2012, Jill was honored with the Jeffrey Katzer Professor of the Year Award, which recognizes a full-time faculty member for outstanding teaching, advising and service. In 2012, the recipient was selected by iSchool graduate students. In 2007, Jill was honored as the "Minority Small Business" Champion by the Syracuse office of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Syracuse SBA office covers 34 counties in Upstate New York. In 1993, she received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the South Central Research Library Council for work with the corporate librarians in the Southern Tier.

Short Bio: Jill Hurst-Wahl is a consultant, speaker, writer, researcher, and educator. She is an associate professor of practice in Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, where she teaches graduate M.S. Library and Information Science (MSLIS) courses, including “Copyright for Information Professionals” and “Collection Development and Access.” Besides teaching, she leads the iSchool Public Libraries Initiative, a research group focused on providing more information to public libraries about what they and their communities need. Jill is the former director of the iSchool M.S. Library and Information Science program, which includes MSLIS: School Media (2012-2017). She is a member of the USNY Technology Policy and Practices Council (2009 to present) and the Onondaga County Public Library Board of Trustees (12/2016 to present). She is a former member of the Special Libraries Association Board of Directors (2011-2013) and of the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries (2007-2012). In 2019, Jill joined the board of the EveryLibrary Institute. In addition to her work at SU, she is the president of Hurst Associates, Ltd., which works with a broad range of organizations. A former corporate librarian, Jill has always been an advocate for expanding the career opportunities for LIS graduates. She blogs at Digitization101.com.
In 2018, Jill began the iSchool Public Libraries Initiative (IPLI). The iSchool Public Libraries Initiative (IPLI) is an intellectual home for iSchool faculty and students who are interested in researching public libraries, applying their research to public libraries, or using public library data in their research.
The IPLI supports research with the goal of providing more information to public libraries about what they and their communities need. The Initiative uses existing and original data in its work; drawing on public data about libraries as well as Initiative-originated qualitative and quantitative data to investigate the state of public libraries.

PersonalA resident of Central New York, Jill likes working in the yard to grow flowers, herbs and a few vegetables. She enjoys spicy foods and has become a connoisseur of hot sauces.
