The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University offers a robust and innovative Library Information Science master’s program. This year, as part of our efforts to help students address career interests and job-hunting efforts, a full week of #LIS Career Workshops is planned.
Beginning October 12 and continuing through October 16, iSchool Career Services and the student organization 
LISSA (Library and Information Science Student Assembly) are co-hosting special events and workshops to help library master’s students address their career-search efforts. Be sure to take advantage of all these great career-building events!
Here’s what’s going on:
Peer Review: Business Cards and Resumes
- Date/Time/Place: Monday, Oct. 12, 6 – 7 p.m. Hinds Hall, Katzer Room 347
- What’s It About: An opportunity for you to get feedback from your peers on your resume and business card in a speed-dating type setting.
- Why You Should Go: Whether you’re putting your materials together now or you’ve done multiple drafts, this is a great opportunity to hear multiple people’s initial impressions of your resume and business card. This is also a no-pressure situation, since you’re not handing your resume to an employer, but rather someone who is also on the hunt for an internship or full-time job.
Online Portfolios Simplified
- Date/Time/Place: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m., Hinds Hall, Room 013
- What It’s About: A hands-on session in a computer lab where you’ll learn what you should include/not include in an online portfolio, and explore some of the ways you can build your own portfolio.
- Why You Should Go: You will always need a resume, but that document alone can’t tell your story. An online portfolio is your chance to show off examples of your work, your personality, and more. The hardest part is figuring out what to include, and which are the best website builders to use. That’s exactly what this session will cover.
Conference Like a Pro
- Date/Time/Place: Wednesday, Oct. 14 – noon to 1:00 p.m., Hinds Hall, Room 121
- What It’s About: How you can make the most out of any professional conference you attend.
- Why You Should Go: There are tremendous benefits that can come from attending a conference if you do so strategically. You will learn how to select a conference to attend, select sessions, manage your budget, and various other tips that will ensure you have a productive and enjoyable conference experience.
iConnect
- Date/Time/Place: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 6-8 p.m., Hinds Hall, First Floor and Social Lounge
What It’s About: An opportunity for you to meet and talk with representatives from local public, academic, and school libraries and organizations. - Why You Should Go: First, it’s important for you to be aware of the libraries and information organizations that exist in your backyard. Additionally, many of these organizations have hired our students as interns or for full-time roles. Could you be next?
Civil Service Panel
- Date/Time/Place: Thursday, Oct. 15, 3:30 – 4:45 p.m., Hinds Hall, Room 021
- What It’s About: In order to get a job at a state library, you will need to go through the civil service exam process to apply. This panel will explain the process and make sure you don’t miss out on opportunities.
- Why You Should Go: If you are considering a career in a state library, it is critical that you understand the civil service exam process. You’ll get a chance to hear from hiring managers from a public, academic, and law library.
CV and The Job Search
- Date/Time/Place: Friday, Oct 16, noon – 1 p.m., Hinds Hall, Room 347
- What It’s About: Librarians from Syracuse University Libraries will be on hand to walk you through the process of writing a CV. They’ll also share stories of what they are looking for in CVs when they are on a hiring committee.
- Why You Should Go: If you have an interest in working in an academic library, this is a unique opportunity to hear tips directly from people who have already secured an academic library position.
