Yoel Roth, API Policy Lead and Senior Product Trust Program Manager in Trust & Safety at Twitter, will deliver his talk, "Swiping left: Personalization and the politics of online dating."

High quality. Relevant. Important. Fastest. Best. Most interesting. The terms used by online platforms to describe the personalization of content tell a compelling story about the benefits of tailoring online activity to the preferences of individual users. But what are the consequences of algorithmic personalization on how we form romantic and sexual relationships?

Through a comparative technical historical study of networked dating, Yoel will outline how the roots of personalization can be found in a decades-long trajectory towards the quantification and translation into data of bodies, identities, and desire.

Q&A to follow Yoel's talk.

Hosted by the Center for Computational and Data Sciences at the School of Information Studies.
