iSchool Website Introduces New Functionality

By: Manan Kakkar

Over the summer, the School of Information Studies (iSchool) technology team introduced a new dashboard for iSchool students to create profiles and access information on faculty, courses and class waitlists. Housed at my.ischool.syr.edu, the new interface provides a simple way to create your profile.

Users can use the built-in WYSIWYG editor to customize their profiles. Faculty and Ph.D students will be able to add and manage their curriculum vitae. Once a CV is loaded into the system, anyone viewing that profile can obtain a PDF version of the CV.

Students, faculty and staff now have the ability to add links to other online properties like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube. Inserting links to social profiles will automatically result in their respective icons linking to profiles on the services.

In today’s social media age, managing personal online identity has become critical. Having an online profile showcasing achievements, interests and skills is a simple way of presenting a summary about you. With the growing popularity of social web services such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and others, offering the ability to automatically link these accounts from an online profile enhances the usability of this service.

The Dashboard also has four directories with details on faculty, staff, adjunct professors and Ph.D candidates. The directories allow users to browse similar profiles and get quick access to contact details (office location, email address and phone numbers).
