How a local web, app and online design company built its agency; the firm’s work culture; and ways the Syracuse collaborative tech atmosphere helped it succeed are topics one of its partners will address at a presentation this Friday.

Eric Hinman, partner at Rounded, will tell the story of how the founders built the agency in Syracuse, “and hopefully will offer some lessons to young entrepreneurs on how to start up a business,” he said. His talk, “How To Build a Startup in Two Years,” takes place from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, February 14, in the ICE Box, the collaborative space on the second floor of Hinds Hall. The talk is hosted by the RVD Idea Center.

Rounded bills itself as “a friendly, outgoing, and approachable group of software developers aimed toward producing products that are clean and efficient.” The company develops websites; mobile websites; iPhone; Android, and iPad apps; web applications; content management systems; and logos and brand identities.

One of the points he will focus on in his talk is the agency’s decision to start up here and to stay in in Syracuse, Hinman noted. He said the company had undertaken talks early on about other possibilities, including relocation to Boulder, Denver, New York, San Francisco, and Austin. “Pretty much every cool city was on the list,” he said, however, “we chose to stay here in Syracuse and it’s been very beneficial for us.”

A graduate of SUNY Geneseo, Hinman’s work focuses on business development, innovation, and business strategy. He also plays a role in the agency’s general management, business operations, product development, talent management, user experience design, and marketing functions.  More information on the event is available here.
