Children's Author and Photographer to Speak at SU

Popular children's author and photographer Charles R. Smith Jr. will speak at Syracuse University's Maxwell Auditorium, May 28, 2004 from 10:30 a.m.-noon. He will perform poems, discuss how artists incorporate things from their lives into their works, and examine the influence of the urban experience on his career as a poet, writer and photographer. His free, public presentation, directed at parents and children, will also appeal to library media specialists, English teachers and reading specialists.

Smith, who earned a bachelor's degree in photography from the Brooks Institute of Photography in 1991, has written several award-winning children's books illustrated with his photographs. A native of Compton, California, Smith has been a photographer for the NBA, WNBA, Bantam/Doubleday, The Washington Post Sunday Magazine, TV Guide, XXL, Slam, and several other publications. His first children's book, Rimshots (Puffin, 1999), received the AIGA Design Award as one of the 50 best-designed books of 1999. Rimshots and his other two books dealing with basketball themes, Tall Tales: Six Amazing Basketball Dreams (Dutton Books, 2000) and Short Takes: Fast Break Poetry (Dutton, 2001) each received Reluctant Reader Awards from the American Library Association. Short Takes was also honored with the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry award.
Smith's appearance is part of the student-run Enriching Literacy through Information Technology (E*LIT) program, and is sponsored by the CDL, the John Ben Snow Foundation, the Central New York Community Foundation and Apple Computer.
The Center for Digital Literacy at Syracuse University, established in Spring 2003, supports collaborative research and development projects related to understanding the impact of information, technology and media literacies on children and adults in today's technology-intensive society. The Center is led by an interdisciplinary team of faculty from SU's School of Information Studies, School of Education and S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, with participation from researchers and educators within and outside the University community.
