A new hardware application, developed by Andrew Farah, a 2009 graduate of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing arts, and a 2011 graduate from the School of Information Studies (iSchool) information management masters program has received recognition at the LAUNCH festival in San Francisco.

Farah co-founded and runs Rounded, a digital agency and software development startup based in the Syracuse Technology Garden. Rounded was founded by Farah and other iSchool graduates. With his Rounded team, he developed a product called Density, a device and software application that measures the number of retail customers in a space.

The product was recognized as the Best Enterprise Hardware device at LAUNCH, an event that covers and celebrates technology startups, products and services, and the people who build them.

Density allows retailers to share information about their customers with each other, to better understand local consumer traffic patterns.

Density is a hardware device that is roughly the size of a deck of playing cards. When installed in a retail environment and connected to its companion application, retail store owners can track and view foot traffic in and out of their business. Density also allows retailers to share their data with other businesses nearby, to better understand how consumer traffic flows between different locations.

50 companies were on hand at LAUNCH to promote their venture on stage in front of a crowd of over 5,000 people. Farah delivered his pitch on February 24.

“There was an enormous amount of support from our Syracuse family,” said Farah, who added that the pitch competition at LAUNCH was “an incredible experience.”

“We are so fortunate and proud to have Andrew as an alum, advisor, and friend,” said iSchool dean Liz Liddy. “He engages our students as a mentor in the Syracuse Student Sandbox, as a judge and board member for the RvD IDEA awards, as a frequent chaperone for our immersion programs, and in a variety of other ways throughout the year.”

Notable former LAUNCH winners have included: Yammer, Dropbox, Hipmunk, and FitBit.

More information and details about the Density product are available on their website.
