Jian Qin, a professor at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, has been honored with the university’s Excellence in Graduate Education Faculty Recognition Award.
The prestigious award honors faculty who have made a significant, positive influence on graduate education through their commitment to superior graduate teaching, dedication to departmental and community presence and research initiatives.
Qin was honored for her work mentoring graduate students in their roles as scholars, teachers and academic professionals and her ability to promote excellence in graduate education.
“Looking back, I found working with graduate students and engaging them in learning and research were most gratifying, and there was never a shortage for inspiration,” Qin said. “As an educator, I share their anticipation and excitement for their new career and feel honored that I was a participant and mentor in their intellectual and cultural growing process.”
The Syracuse University Graduate School Programs annually solicits nominations from graduate students, faculty, staff and alumni for the Excellence in Graduate Education Faculty Recognition Award. Nominations are reviewed and winners selected by an interdisciplinary committee of graduate students.
In her role at the university, Qin conducts research in areas of metadata, knowledge and data modeling, scientific communication, research collaboration networks, and research data management. She directs a Metadata Lab that focuses on big metadata analytics and metadata modeling and linking.
Qin has published widely in national and international research journals and was the co-author of the book, Metadata, and co-editor for several special journal issues on knowledge discovery in databases and knowledge representation. She is the recipient of the 2020 Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology.
