Upstate IT Scholarships

Increasing the Upstate Information Technology Talent Pool

Upstate IT ScholarshipsInformation professionals have rich opportunities in Upstate New York. In Central New York alone, there are currently 600 technology-related positions available with not enough qualified candidates to fill them. The Syracuse University School of Information Studies (iSchool) sees an opportunity to educate area residents to assume these technically focused open positions and strengthen the economic vitality of Upstate New York.

The iSchool will offer the Upstate IT Scholarships--a select number of 50-percent tuition scholarships to qualified applicants. These scholarships will be for the 2010-2011 academic year. That means the iSchool will cover 50 percent of the tuition costs for the academic year.

Program Goals

The goal of the Upstate IT Scholarship Program is to:
  • Attract permanent residents of Upstate New York to technology-related graduate programs by offering awards for 50 percent of tuition costs
  • Enhance the information technology workforce of Upstate New York
  • Sustain local industry for the benefit of our future graduates

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for the Upstate IT Scholarships, you must:

Flexibility

The iSchool is a recognized leader in online education as well as campus-based programs. Many of our graduate students are working professionals who opt to enroll in our part-time, online courses that allow them to attend courses and complete assignments on a schedule that is compatible with their busy lifestyles. Our online program offers asynchronous courses that don’t require a student to be “in class” at a specific time and provides the flexibility that working professionals need to balance their course loads with work and family responsibilities.

Therefore, recipients of the scholarships can be enrolled:
     • As part-time or full-time students
     • In the online or campus-based versions of the degree programs
     • In multiple academic programs at one time (master’s and certificate
       programs)
