New Student Checklist
New Student Checklist
Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to the iSchool! We look forward to having you join us. Below is an iSchool New Student Checklist to help you stay on track and transition smoothly. Please note that many steps should be completed
prior to the first day of classes.
•
Confirm your intent to enroll by returning your Intent to Register (ITR) card (included in your admission letter envelope) and paying your Advanced Tuition Deposit. International students may return the completed ITR and
Advanced Tuition Deposit forms and submit via email (please be sure both sides of the ITR are included) to
grad@syr.edu.
•
Review the Graduate School website for information about health/immunization requirements, housing, health insurance information, and the Syracuse, NY area.
•
Register for MySlice. Your Intent to Register card will include your personal SU ID number. Use this number to register and activate your personal
MySlice account. First time users must
Activate NetID in order to access university computing systems (FAQ’s about NetID can be found
here). MySlice will be used to register for courses and to provide you with important student information.
•
Set up your SU Email address. Information about setting up your SU email address is located
here. If your SU email will not be your primary email address, it is strongly encouraged that you set up email forwarding from that account now. Your SU email will be the primary email on file for you at the university and be used by faculty and offices across campus to communicate important information, even before you begin classes.
•
Review your program requirements. Curriculum requirements are posted on the iSchool
website by program, and will also be sent to you via email in early July by Jose Tavarez, Graduate Academic Counselor. It is important for you to review these requirements and identify your gateway courses as you will want to register for these in your first semester.
•
Review the Course Schedule. The iSchool
Course Schedule can help you determine which course you’d like to register for in your first semester, in addition to your gateway courses
•
Register for Courses. Fall 2012 registration for new students opens August 1st and can be done online through your
MySlice account. It is strongly advised that you register for gateway courses early on in the registration period as these courses can fill quickly. If you find that a course is full, you may add yourself to the waitlist using the online
Course Schedule. The Late Registration/Schedule Adjustment period for Fall 2012 is Monday, Aug 27th – Tues, Sept 4th. You will need
Bursar Clearance before registering during this period if you did not previously register for a course prior to August 27th. There is a $35.00 late fee. Schedule adjustments may also be made during the Late Registration period.
•
Review the syllabus for IST 601. IST 601 – Information and Information Environments is the required 1 credit introductory course. You will receive the syllabus via email. The syllabus and required readings will also be posted on the Course Syllabi link on Blackboard. The course takes place on Saturday August 25th and Sunday August 26th. The assignment for this course must be completed two weeks prior to the first day of class.
•
Access Blackboard.
Blackboard is SU’s Learning Management system which will allow you to access your course assignments, syllabi and information.
•
Sign-up for the appropriate student listserv. Instructions for how to sign-up for the listserv can be found
here. Be sure to check listserv emails for important information and set up email forwarding to your primary account if needed.
