Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation
 
Profile:
           
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) provides funds to advance education in fulfillment of its mission: “To promote life long learning.”  (http://www.akaeaf.org)
  • merit scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the amount of $1,000. This is a one year award
  • financial Assistance scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students ranging from $750 to $1,500. This is a one-year award
  • endowed scholarships are awarded from funds restricted by the donor. The criteria may be restrictive, and the frequency and award amounts vary. Scholarship applications are available in November for Sorority members and December for all others
  • mini-grants are one-time awards to individuals and organizations implementing projects addressing one of the programmatic thrusts of Alpha Kappa Alpha: Education, The Black Family, Economics, The Arts, or Health
  • youth P.A.C. (Youth Partners Accessing Capital), a program reserved for undergraduate sorority members administered by undergraduate sorority members, is a process to assist in the exposure and involvement of young people in philanthropy. This award is presented to sorority members only
 
Requirements:
The following general criterion provides a summary and applies to all award categories:
  • undergraduates must be currently enrolled as a sophomore or beyond in an accredited degree granting program
  • graduate students must plan to continue their academic pursuits in the fall of the grant year
  • demonstrated exceptional academic achievement/or financial need
  • leadership, volunteer, civic and academic services

  • January 15 of each year
    • Applications postmarked after January 15th will not be considered.
  • regional panels meet annually in April to review applications and select semi-finalists. This is a blind process (without knowledge of who the applicant is), to insure fairness and objectivity. Recommendations by the panels are subject to final approval by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation Board of Directors.
  • scholarship recipients are notified by May of the same year

 

 

Department of Homeland Security
Profile:
  • Department of Homeland Security Graduate Fellowship awards are intended for students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission.  DHS realizes that the country’s strong science and technology community provides a critical advantage in the development and implementation of counter-terrorist measures.  This education program is intended to ensure a diverse and highly talented science and technology community to achieve the DHS mission and objectives.  Areas of study include:  physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences including science policy, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • civilian and non-active duty military personnel only
  • must have undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher
  • for students beginning in fist or second year of graduate study
  • must be pursuing research based graduate degree in physical, biological, social and behavioral sciences including science policy, engineering, mathematics, or computer science
  • career and employment goals that align with mission and objectives of U.S. Department of Homeland Security
  • must be enrolled as a full time student
  • must meet all Application Deadlines

Everett Internship Program
Profile:
  • The Everett Public Service Internship Program: The Everett Program serves two goals. First, it encourages a students' future involvement in public service by acquainting them with the challenges and rewards of a public interest community, which too often operates on limited resources. Secondly, the program combines involvement in public service with the dedication, energy and idealism that interns bring to their work. With these goals in mind, Henry and Edith Everett established their Everett Public Service Internship Program in 1989. Since then, nearly two thousand students from communities across the country have discovered the immense satisfaction of contributing to society, while acquiring significant knowledge, experience and career development opportunities.
 
Eligibility:
  • all applicants must have at least completed two semesters of college education and should be current undergraduate or graduate students
Funds:
  • internship lasts ten weeks and provides $220 weekly for expenses

Internships are offered by an affiliated public service organization. Apply directly to each organization of your choice.
 

Fulbright Grants for Graduate Study Abroad through Institute of International Education
 
Profile:
  • Comprehensive Fulbright Grants provide students the opportunity and support for personal development and international experience through one year’s residence in virtually any country of the world.  Some projects funded include university coursework and/or dissertation research.  The grants provide transportation, book and research allowances, maintenance funds for academic year, insurance assistance, tuition assistance, and sometimes language/orientation classes where appropriate.
  • Fulbright Travel Grants are available only for Germany, Hungary, and Italy.  They help to supplement travel costs for students with non-IIE scholarships or no scholarships.  Such grants provide round-trip transportation, supplemental insurance, and orientation course cost.
 
Requirements:
  • applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application
  • preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was undertaken primarily at educational institutions in the United States. Foreign study during the junior year or other periods of undergraduate study that are integral parts of the curricula of American institutions will not be considered disqualifying
  • preference will usually be given to candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying within the meaning of this section
  • applicants must hold a B.A. degree or the equivalent before the beginning date of the grant.  Applicants may not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application, unless otherwise noted
  • applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study. Such proficiency is especially important to students wishing to undertake projects in the social sciences and the humanities
  • applicants must be in good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Health from a physician

IBM Scholars PhD Fellowship Program
 
Profile:
IBM PhD Fellowship Program is intended to honor exceptional PhD students in disciplines of mutual interest, including: chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering and physics, as well as emerging technical fields, such as e-commerce, nanotechnology, and the computational sciences. IBM PhD Fellows in the United States and Canada are awarded tuition, fees, and a stipend of $17,500 (US) for one academic year.  Fellowships are awarded annually and may be renewed up to three years.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
 
Profile:
  • Graduate Scholarship Program: This program awards approximately 35 scholarships worth up to $50,000 each to college seniors or recent graduates to attend graduate or professional programs.
Requirements:
  • must be a senior in a US college or graduated from a US college since May, 1999
  • already been accepted into a full-time graduate degree program at an accredited university to begin studies in the incoming Fall semester, or has already been accepted into such a program by the April 30 application deadline
  • cumulative undergraduate grade point average 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent)

Office of Personnel Management e-Scholar
 
Profile:
  • The United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) e-scholar website provides students information on different educational opportunities offered by the Federal Government departments and agencies, or partnering organizations, including fellowships, grants, internships and scholarships. OPM’s goal is to simplify the process of finding educational opportunities and assist Federal Government agencies in attracting the talented professionals from diverse groups and academic areas. Application requirements, including when to apply, will differ for each program. The e-Scholar website provides information on programs that are offered throughout the year (spring, summer, fall, and winter). Program durations will vary from 6 weeks up to 3 years depending on the requirements. U.S. Department of Education
Profile:
Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated: superior academic ability and achievement; exceptional promise; financial need to undertake graduate study leading to a doctoral degree or a master’s degree in which the master’s degree is the terminal highest degree in the selected field of study.
 
Requirements:
  • applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, permanent residents of the U.S., or citizens of any one of the Freely Associated States
  • applicants must be eligible to be accepted to or currently attending a graduate program leading to a doctorate or a terminal master's degree in an eligible field of study
  • undergraduate students about to enter graduate school and graduate students who have not yet completed their first year of graduate study and who intend to pursue a doctoral or master's degree, if the master's degree is the terminal or highest degree awarded in an approved field, may apply

The Supreme Court Fellows Program
 
Profile:
  • The program seeks outstanding individuals from diverse professions and academic backgrounds, including law, the social and behavioral sciences, public and business administration, systems research and analysis, communications, and the humanities.
  • Work assignments and projects reflect the needs of the judiciary and the interests and capabilities of the fellows. Fellows gain insight into the contemporary policy issues facing the judiciary as well as an appreciation of the nature of judicial administration. Individuals best able to maximize the resources of the Supreme Court Fellows Program are those with initiative, poise, and adaptability.
  • The Supreme Court Fellows Program is administered by the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Chief Justice in cooperation with the Federal Judicial Center, the Administrative Office of the United States Courts, the United States Sentencing Commission and the Supreme Court Historical Society.

This scholarship program was launched this year to recognize excellence in incoming applicants and to encourage them to participate in and lead the graduate student organizations and other initiatives within the school.

The performing arts culture thrives at SU with hundreds of plays, concerts, and other shows available for students to attend or participate in each year.

Founded in 1870, Syracuse University has an enrollment of approximately 11,500 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students, who come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

The School of Information Studies at Syracuse University held its iOpening celebration at its new home in Hinds Hall on the Main Campus Quad. The festivities included a digital ribbon cutting of a virtual red ribbon wrapped around an image of Hinds Hall.
