iConference announces its 2010 keynote speakers
10/19/2009

The 2010 iConference will be held February 3-6, 2010, at the iHotel and Conference Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This year’s keynote speakers are Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica and Wolfram|Alpha, and the author of "A New Kind of Science"; and Marti Hearst, professor in the School of Information at the University of California, Berkeley, who is currently working in the Obama Administration on e-government with a focus on search.

Wolfram, a renowned scientist, inventor, author, and business leader, will speak on February 4. Wolfram is the founder and CEO of Wolfram Research. He received his education at Eton, Oxford, and earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Caltech at 20-years-old. In 1981, he released his construction of SMP, which became the first modern computer algebra system. That same year Wolfram became the youngest recipient of a MacArthur Prize Fellowship. Wolfram went on to create Mathematica in 1988, and released Mathematica version 2 in 1991. In 1987 Wolfram founded Wolfram Research and in 2009 he launched Wolfram|Alpha, a long-term project to make as much of the worlds knowledge as possible accessible to everyone through computers.

Hearst earned a B.A., M.S., and Ph. D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on human-computer interaction, information visualization, computational linguistics, and search and information retrieval. Hearst is currently working on three projects, the Flamenco project, which explores new ways to improve search user interfaces for the general public; the Biotext project, which analyzes the biological scientific literature by creating new natural language processing algorithms; and the Online Social Interaction project, which is a studying online dating to gain a better understanding of computer-mediated communication.

The deadline for submissions to the iConference is November 18. Please remember to use the ACM style guide for submissions.
