Associate Professor Derrick L. Cogburn elected section president at annual meeting
2/25/2009

Associate Professor Derrick L. Cogburn was recently elected president of the International Communication Section of the International Studies Association (ICOMM ISA). In this position, Cogburn will be responsible for recruitment, budget, and other planning decisions as well as serving as liaison between the section and the association president.
The liaison role is especially relevant for Cogburn, who is also the president of the Information Technology and Politics section of the American Political Science Association (APSA ITP). This joint presidency was intentional and will be used to foster communication and interaction between the two organizations, Cogburn says. Prior to being elected president of ICOMM ISA, Cogburn had been the program chair for the 2009 ISA Annual Convention in New York.
His goals for his coming term focus on communication and collaboration. He says that he would like to see the membership for ICOMM ISA to continue to grow. He added that there is a large amount of interest in the section and that he will work to translate this interest into involvement. He also stressed the importance of increasing communication among the section’s subcommittees; strengthening ICOMM ISA’s relationship with its sister organization, APSA ITP; and furthering the use and study of web conferencing and the quick “rapid reactions” that keep communications open and flowing.
Cogburn’s term will last for one year. A new president will be elected at the section’s next annual meeting.
