SU Redesignated as Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance
8/17/2007

The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have redesignated Syracuse University as a national Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance (IA). The announcement was made at the Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) held at Boston University on June 5, 2007.

Syracuse University was first designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in IA in 2001, when it joined other prestigious universities such as Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University in this honor. SU was redesignated in 2007, and will be eligible for redesignation again in 2012.

The School of Information Studies, the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications have collaborated to promote interdisciplinary education in information assurance. Faculty and staff members involved in the Systems Assurance Institute include the School of Information Studies' Scott Bernard, Jeff Stanton, Joon Park, Michelle Kaarst-Brown, and Bruce Kingma.

To be named a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance, an institution must meet IA courseware standards defined by the Information Assurance Courseware Evaluation (IACE) Program. These standards are determined by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS). The IACE certifies that the institution complies with all requirements that apply to its specific courseware set of instruction.

As an IACE certified institution, Syracuse University meets the national training and education standards for Information Systems Security Professionals, Senior Systems Managers, System Administrators, Information Systems Security Officers, System Certifiers, and Risk Analysts.

Park is also the director of the Certificate of Advanced Study in Information Security Management.
