National Distance Learning Week Online Profiles

Gregory ZinkRebecca Buerkett G’09 is a full-time mother and distance learning student in the Syracuse University iSchool’s M.S. in Library and Information Science program. Buerkett, who currently works as a permanent substitute teacher, lives in the very rural northern Adirondacks area with no colleges within close driving distance.

“I love being a distance student,” Buerkett said. “Distance learning has allowed me to get my degree from one of the best schools in the country for my field of study, while still being able to work and raise a family.”

As a full-time student, Buerkett takes two to four classes each semester. Her courses included the core general library science courses as well as classes for her specialization in school library media.

The past year and a half, Buerkett has had to come to Syracuse University three times, and expects to make the trip once more for her graduation ceremony in spring 2010. In the beginning of her program, Buerkett came to campus for a week-long “boot camp,” filled with intensive activities.

Buerkett said that first week was a great way start out the program because she was able to meet the classmates and professors she would be communicating with and working with throughout the program.

“During that first week, we were able to familiarize ourselves with the resources available to us through Syracuse, and participate in several group projects,” Buerkett said.

Buerkett’s second visit to campus was for a weekend introduction to one of her courses. Her last visit to SU was to complete a week-long intensive summer course.

“It was a heavy load at times, and I’ve had to be very motivated and organized,” Buerkett said.” I’ve also had to be okay with not getting much sleep!” Despite the heavy course load and responsibilities at home, Buerkett says she has had a blast with the program.

Currently, Buerkett is completing her final semester in the program. Buerkett said her online program has left her very well prepared for her future as a school librarian. “My classes often include projects that require me to work with a local librarian in a local school library, so I get face-to-face, real world experience in addition to my online professors,” Buerkett said. “I’ve met lots of great people, and I enjoy having an online network.”
