Overview
U. Yeliz Eseryel is an adjunct professor and a Ph.D. candidate at Syracuse University School of Information Studies in Syracuse, New York. Yeliz is an adjunct professor at IESEG Business School (France), University of Aarhus Business School (Denmark), and Bilkent University (Turkey). She holds an MBA (with specializations in Supply Chain Management and Global Entrepreneurship) and a Master’s degree in Information Management from Syracuse University. She is certified in project management (PMP) and production and inventory management (CPIM).
Yeliz managed IT projects for Welch Allyn, Inc. a global medical device manufacturer. Her projects included Welch Allyn’s SAP Implementations in North America and Europe.
Her experience in Enterprise Architecture includes support for EA projects at the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development while she was working with Booz | Allen | Hamilton and with PricewaterhouseCoopers. Her journal article “Enterprise architecture as a context for ERP implementation” (with Nancy Wolf) was the first one combining both expertise areas, published in 2005 in the Journal of Enterprise Architecture.
Yeliz’s overall research agenda is concerned with the implementation and use of the appropriate information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to increase organizational and team-level innovation, performance and success. Accomplishing success with ICTs require ensuring fit between the (1) ICT features and (2) the organizational structures, and (3) team processes. The organizational structures include (but are not limited to) leadership, formal rules, group norms, and organizational culture. Team processes refer to how the ICT’s are used for communication, collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation.
Yeliz’s dissertation focuses on leadership and team dynamics in virtual and Open Source Software development teams. She conducts longitudinal case studies of Apache Open Source teams for her dissertation.
Research Interests
Yeliz's research focuses on the how (1)Information and Communication Technologies, (2) social/organizational structures, and (3) business processes fit together to ensure team level and organizational success and innovation. Some of the contexts she is interested in studying are; Virtual Teams (Open Source Software Development Teams) and ERP Systems Implementations.
Dissertation Title: Leadership in Self-Managing Virtual Teams
Dissertation Abstract:
Despite its abundance, it is not known what part of the traditional leadership research transfers directly to the leadership context of self-managing virtual (SMV) teams. Thus, how leadership manifests, evolves and changes in real-life SMV teams is not known. This, and the increasing ubiquity of SMV teams, makes longitudinal studies of leadership within real-life SMV teams a timely endeavor. This research study aims at identifying the leadership behaviors that are manifested and perceived in SMV teams. The specific research questions are: (1) How do task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership behaviors manifest in self-managing virtual teams?(2) How do leadership behaviors in SMV teams evolve over time? and (3) Which leadership behaviors contribute to leadership perceptions in SMV teams?
This paper proposes a longitudinal case study design in studying Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) team interactions. Case studies ofApache Lucene Java and Apache Directory will be conducted. This study investigates a key factor, leadership, which contributes to the continuity and success of self-managing virtual teams. The study contributes to four areas of inquiry: (1) It investigates how leadership manifests in SMV teams, differently from traditional organizational leadership. (2) By investigating real-life teams over a long period of time, this study fills a gap in the literature for longitudinal studies that reveal the dynamic nature of leadership. (3) By analyzing leadership from both a behavioral perspective and from the point of follower perception, the connection between leader behaviors and follower perceptions is revealed. (4) Finally, the methodological contribution of this study is a content analysis schema for analyzing leadership behaviors within SMV teams, and especially for FLOSS teams.
