Dr. Nicholson is a library scientist, which means that he uses systematic research methods to explore facets of librarianship, with the goal of helping librarians better serve their user communities.
One of his research areas is the intersection of gaming in libraries. Dr. Nicholson studies the ways in which libraries use recreational gaming activities and explores what activities are most effective for different user groups and different goals. Research Interests

Dr. Nicholson's research interests include the intersection of gaming in libraries and the use of data warehousing and data mining to support evidence-based librarianship through the bibliomining process. His secondary areas of research include Web search tools and new methods for distance education.
Teaching Interests
Dr. Nicholson teaches courses from the library science discipline, such as library systems and processes; information architecture; information source creation, identification, and use; Web and database searching; gaming in libraries; and is interested in teaching courses in research methods and statistics and data mining.
Professional Interests
Dr. Nicholson is active in the American Library Association and has served on the editorial board for Information Technology and Libraries. He is also the faculty sponsor for the student American Library Association chapter, which is a virtual chapter with members around the country.
Dr. Nicholson created AskScott in 1996, a tool to aid users in selecting the most appropriate search tool for their need. He is the host of the Board Games with Scott video series as well and hosts the Games in Libraries podcast.
He works with the Information Institute of Syracuse on various digital library projects, such as Participatory Librarianship, the Credibility Commons, the Virtual Reference Desk and the National Digital Science Library, and is working to establish the Library Game Lab of Syracuse.
Personal Interests
I enjoy games and puzzles of all types. I play the tenor saxophone and dabble in other forms of music (hammered dulcimer, voice). I appreciate the theater, celtic music, Renaissance fairs, and theme parks. I enjoy sharing my life and travel experiences through www.scottnicholson.com.
