Overview
Martha Garcia-Murillo is an Associate Professor of Information Studies at Syracuse University. She has an M.S. in Economics and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Public Policy from the University of Southern California. She worked at USCs Center for Telecommunications Management where she was involved in developing industry sponsored reports in telecommunications and cable. She also worked as a regulatory officer at the International Telecommunications Union in Geneva, Switzerland, where she wrote the working document for the negotiations among Central American countries for the harmonization of telecommunications regulation in the region. During the Spring of 2003 Prof. Garca-Murillo was currently on sabbatical as a visiting scholar at the Internet and Telecommunications Convergence Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Research Interests
Dr. Garcia-Murillo specializes in regulation of information and communication related industries. Her areas of research include institutional and information economics and information economics, the impact of regulation of business behavior and factors that affect ifrastructure deployment. Several of her current projects focus on the regulation of telecommunications in Latin American and the they way regulators are affected by convergence
Teaching Interests
Prof. Garca-Murillo has taught several courses in the information field including Information Industry Policy, U.S. Telecommunications Regulation, International Telecommunications Regulation, Information Management, International management, and new institutional economics.
Professional Interests
Dr. Garca-Murillo is a member of the International Telecommunications Society, the Trasportation and Publig Utilities Group, the International Society for New Institutional Economics, and the Association of Information Systems. She has organized several Latin American mini-tracks at the AIS Americas conferences. She has been an invited speaker for meetings of international telecommunications regulators and at conferences sponsored by the International Telecommunications Union.
Personal Interests
I enjoy meeting with friends. I like biking and skiing for summer and winter activities.
