Career Planning: Overview

From the moment that students arrive on campus, iSchool faculty and staff are ready to help them achieve success in class and in their careers beyond campus. We have put into place a distributed network of supportive services to ensure that our students have a multitude of resources at their fingertips.

The school-wide Corporate and Library Internships and Careers (CLIC) Committee is charged with enhancing corporate and library relations and leveraging these relationships to expand internship and employment opportunities for iSchool students.

CLIC members include:

  • program directors and faculty representatives from each program

  • school recruiter

  • development officer

  • alumni relations director

  • support staff

  • University career services representative

The CLIC Model

  • Leverages a distributed network of resources, including

      • Faculty

      • Staff

      • Alumni

      • University departments such as the Center for Career Services

  • Builds on our strong alumni network to connect students with internship and career opportunities

  • Increases faculty involvement in student internships and career planning

  • Provides another example of Chancellor’s vision of faculty engagement with the surrounding community

  • Personalizes services offered by the University Center for Career Services that our students already take advantage of. For example, during the last academic year (2006-07):

    • 222 iSchool students submitted resumes for on-campus recruiting

    • 148 iSchool students received interviews

    • 1922 jobs were posted by 1040 employers on OrangeLink for iSchool students

    • Hundreds of iSchool students attend the University Career Fair in the Dome every fall to find internships and jobs

    • Many attend resume and cover letter writing, mock interview, and job search trainings hosted by the University Career Services each semester.

NOTE: These services are also available to distance learning students. These students should e-mail or schedule telephone appointments with your faculty advisor or Kathy Benjamin (kabenjam@syr.edu) in the Student Services Office.

iSchool alumni return every year to network with students, share their experiences, and offer tips on how to enhance marketability in the workplace.
The iSchool frequently brings in a wide range of speakers to address students and faculty on issues ranging from entrepreneurship and business practices to intellectual research and curriculum development.
