After earning an undergraduate degree in exercise physiology from the University of Southern Maine, I ventured off to graduate school at Ithaca College. As I was finishing my degree there, I realized that what I enjoyed most was all of the background research I did on various subjects in the library. I began to ask myself, "Who gets to do this kind of thing for a living?" and of course, the answer was "Librarians"!
I enrolled in the MLS program at SU in January 2003. After one semester as a local student in Syracuse, I finished the rest of my degree requirements from home in Maine. The two experiences showed me, first-hand, how learning can and does occur through very different means. Moreover, using WebCT, accessing the library via proxy servers, and employing other "newer" technologies of distance learning have all proven tremendously beneficial in the working world.
I finished my degree in August 2004 and began working in the Reference Department of the library at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in January 2005. I feel very fortunate to have a position that allows me to combine my interests in health sciences and libraries. In my current position as Information Education Librarian, I provide reference services, teach classes, and serve on the Library's new institutional repository team. I also oversee a state-wide project sponsored by the National Library of Medicine that brings quality consumer health information to Massachusetts residents via the Internet. Being able to work on such diverse projects proves both challenging and exciting - and definitely makes work fun!
I live in Worcester, MA and welcome contact from alumni, current and/or prospective students. I can be reached at
