MS in Library and Information Science

Mission: To educate students to become leaders in the evolution of the library and information profession in the 21st century.

The Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MSLIS) degree provides a foundation in traditional librarianship as well as skill sets necessary for emerging leadership roles of librarians in information centers, the information industry, and other venues. The School of Information Studies faculty members are nationally known leaders in such fields as digital literacy, school media libraries, digital libraries, classification, reference services, and much more. The MSLIS degree at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and ranked #3 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

The MSLIS program is available in campus-based or distance learning formats to full-time or part-time students.

Syracuse University's School of Information Studies is a founding institution, along with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Graduate School of Library and Information Science, of the Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) Consortium. WISE allows students enrolled in library and information science programs at participating institutions to take online courses at any other participating institution. The MSLIS program also offers a specialization in School Media, as well as a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries for those who want to work with organizing and managing collections of digital information, either within or outside of established libraries, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Media.
