David HarrisonMS in Library and Information Science ‘07Rochester, NYAfter earning my BA at the University of Rochester, I knew there was only one i-School that I wanted to attend: Syracuse University. During the summer of 2005, I attended “Grad School Boot Camp” (designed especially for distance students) and quickly decided that I wanted to supplement the MLIS with a Certificate of Advanced Study in Digital Libraries (CAS-DL). Besides being extremely challenging and rewarding, earning the CAS-DL in an online format is a perfect merging of medium and message (with acknowledgments to Marshall McLuhan). Halfway through the program, I accepted professional employment as a Market Research Analyst at a professional services firm that I had learned about through Syracuse’s alumni network. Also in 2006, I was honored to be named the first recipient of the Fay and Robert Taylor Scholarship, established to honor Professor Robert S. Taylor, former Dean and Professor of the School of Information Studies.
I was attracted to the library profession because it requires someone who is a “jack of all trades.” That is a role with which I am very familiar. Academically, I supplemented my Film & Media Studies degree with a Certificate in Management Studies from the University of Rochester’s William E. Simon School of Business, which awarded me a Simon scholarship. I’ve also challenged myself in other areas besides academics: learning the necessary carpentry, electrical, and plumbing skills to renovate two different hundred year old houses; performing and managing an original musical group in my younger days; and now being a family man and non-traditional student. I live in Rochester, NY, welcome contact from alumni, current, and prospective students, and can be reached at
