B.S. in Information Management & Technology ‘02
New York City, NY
After coming to Syracuse University with hopes of being the next great sportscaster, I shifted gears to the School of Information Studies, when reality set in a year or so after arriving. With the help of my education and experience in the IST program, I have managed a successful career as a Network Engineer. While the diversity of IST classes offered a unique opportunity to become well-rounded with the mixture of technical, management, and business oriented classes, I feel the most important part of the program is the real-world extra curriculum activities available through the school. In addition to classroom learning, I helped start the CENT (Center for Network Technology) lab, I researched new technologies with Network Computing magazine, I began my Cisco certifications, and I got various levels of hands-on experience helping with technology projects in the community.
After graduating I went to work for Aetna in Middletown, CT, and continued to build upon the skills I gained in the IST program. I can not stress enough how important the real world experience I got during the school year and the summer internship opportunities through IST helped ease the transition into my first job and allowed me to hit the ground running. Also, I felt the classes actually laid a good groundwork for the work environment by preparing students to work in groups and on teams, and be able to participate on projects in both a technical and project management capacity.
In 2004, I relocated back to my hometown of New York City to work with the hedge fund division of UBS and have since moved on to a Senior Network Engineer. In this role I have a full array of responsibilities, from the traditional Network Engineer technical work to project management and designing data rooms for new buildings. I am very interested in helping IST students, particularly in the NY metropolitan area, and would welcome e-mail from alumni, current students, and prospective students.
