All U.S. citizens and permanent residents are now eligible for a 25% tuition award.

This new USAward is an expansion of our tuition award for NY state residents, and is for incoming main-campus students for Summer or Fall 2020 only.

We are still accepting applications, and once your application has been submitted, and you will be notified if you meet the criteria for the award.

Scholarship List

The iSchool is committed to increasing the number of information professionals in New York State. This award is a selective 25% tuition award that enables a group of highly motivated and accomplished individuals from New York State to attend the iSchool for graduate study. The goal of the 25% Tuition Award for New York State Residents is to attract permanent residents of New York State to library, information and technology-related careers, enhance the information technology workforce of New York state and sustain state and local industry for the benefit of our future graduates. Applicants must submit a 500 word essay.

Who is eligible to apply: all new iSchool master’s and C.A.S. program applicants who are permanent residents of New York State. On campus, part-time, and full-time format students are all eligible to apply.

Have you ever worked in a library? Do you currently work in a library? Do you want to increase your professional opportunities? The iSchool wants to help you achieve your goals. To be eligible, applicants must be admitted to one of these programs and have worked for one or more years in a library or library setting. Students employed for at least an academic year in a library are also eligible. To apply, students must be an applicant to an iSchool Library and Information Science (LIS) program, submit a 500 word essay describing their work in libraries, and provide a letter of recommendation from their library supervisor.

Who is eligible to apply: M.S. in Library and Information Science, M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization, and C.A.S. in Data Science applicants. On-campus, part-time, and full-time format students are all eligible to apply.

The iSchool supports diversity in the field of information science. We believe that information impacts and has the potential to transform all individuals and populations. Each year, the iSchool provides tuition awards to individuals admitted to our M.S. and C.A.S. programs who represent diverse populations and demonstrate a strong commitment toward using the skills of an information professional to impact communities and organizations.

Who is eligible: all on-campus iSchool master’s and C.A.S. program applicants. On-campus students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible.

Tuition awards will be granted to exceptional admitted students to all iSchool master’s programs. These awards are up to 50% tuition awards, but may vary depending on the pool of applicants. Top candidates will be contacted in the spring for an interview. No additional application materials are required; candidates are considered based on the merit of application materials.

The Faculty Engagement Scholarship award offers top applicants a formal mentorship with an iSchool faculty member and a 30% tuition award.

  • Students who are selected for an Excellence Award are invited to apply to be a Faculty Engagement Scholar (FES).  Faculty review the submissions and select a mentee. (Selection of the Excellence Awards is based on the admission application and there is no application.)
  • Faculty make the selections for their FES mentees in mid-March – April of the preceding year. Students who are not selected will still have the opportunity to work with faculty through our Faculty Assistant Program and will learn more during orientation.
  • Domestic and international applicants to the full time campus Applied Data Science, Enterprise Data Systems, or Information Management program are eligible for this award.
  • Scholars are matched with an iSchool faculty member whose research interests align with their career goals, experience and skills.
  • The formal mentorship includes the scholar working the equivalent of 10 hours/week each semester with the mentor at the iSchool’s prevailing graduate student wages.

The iSchool has more than 30 tenured and tenure-track faculty engaged in a great variety of interesting research areas. The school also has several research-focused professors who include scholarly work in their portfolio of professional activities.

Who is eligible: Applicants to the on-campus M.S. in Applied Data Science, M.S. in Enterprise Data Systems, and  M.S. in Information Management program.

The program director and faculty of each of the master’s programs selects the top candidates for iSchool admission. These applicants are awarded partial tuition awards to recognize their excellence. The indicators of excellence involve academic performance as well as professional and community service. No additional application materials are required; candidates are considered based on their application materials.

Who is eligible: all on-campus master’s program applicants. Current students are also considered for these awards.

The Information Literacy in Academic Libraries Scholarship is for students who are passionate about information literacy and interested in a career as an academic librarian.

Information Literacy Scholars receive a 50% tuition award, 20 hours a week of work during the academic year with Syracuse University Libraries, and mentoring by Syracuse University librarians with expertise in reference, information literacy instruction, and student learning assessment.

Who is eligible to apply: On-campus M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization applicants.

The iSchool Values Award recognizes and reinforces the core values of excellence, discovery and innovation, integrity, diversity and inclusion, and global citizenship and engagement that drive the iSchool’s academic programs and its cultural environment. Awardees are considered ideal ambassadors of the iSchool vision and values who aspire to practice those values as information professionals after graduation.

iSchool Values Award winners receive a financial award that is also renewable for the second year.

Who is eligible to apply: On-campus M.S. in Applied Data Science, M.S. in Enterprise Data Systems, M.S. in Information Management, M.S. in Information Management for Executives, and M.S. in Library and Information Science applicants.

The iSchool and has a long history of supporting both veterans and those currently serving in the military. We offer scholarships to help support military personnel and veterans attending one of our master’s programs.

This scholarship requires an additional application. Applicants mustprovide information about current military education benefits and submit a 500 word essay answering the question: How will your selected choice of study enable you to better serve your country and your profession?

The Library Leadership Award is for students who are prepared for an intense but highly rewarding academic experience at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies. We are able to offer the Library Leadership Award due to a generous donation from our library alumna, Estelle Wilhelm.

Library Leadership Award recipients receive a 50% tuition award, 20 hours a week of work during the academic year with an iSchool faculty mentor matched to the student’s area of interest, and up to $1,000 of travel fund reimbursement for professional conferences.

Who is eligible to apply: On-campus M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization applicants.

Our scholarships are highly competitive, and most are partial awards. It is the iSchool’s philosophy to award smaller scholarships to more students, rather than very large awards to only a few. There are also current student awards that provide tuition and work for students who excel and become leaders at the iSchool.

Awards funded by the iSchool cannot be combined. If a student is selected for more than one award, then the higher value award will be offered.

Students who apply before February 1 (fall admission) are given priority consideration. Scholarship decisions are made separately from admissions decisions. Students receiving awards will be notified via email between March and May.

Some scholarships require supplemental materials, while others require only what you submitted for admission. Awards that require additional application materials are noted, and access to additional application materials is granted once you have completed an application to an iSchool program.

Endowed Scholarships

Students who exemplify excellence may be considered for one of the named graduate awards designated specifically for applicants to the  M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization programs.

These awards are made possible by the generous contributions of alumni and friends of the iSchool, and range from partial to full funding. These awards are offered by the faculty to exceptional admitted students.

No additional application materials are required for these scholarships; candidates are considered based on their application materials.

The D. Whitney Coe Graduate Financial Assistance Fund is for Korean students who want to obtain a Master’s degree from the iSchool, with preference to those studying library science. This award covers partial to full tuition.

This scholarship was established in 1998 by D. Whitney Coe who graduated from Syracuse University in 1959 with a B.A. and in 1967 with an MLS. Mr. Coe’s interests concentrated on international librarianship. He discovered the reality faced by librarians from other countries and saw both the contributions American librarians could make, as well as how much American librarians could learn when working in the international environment.

Who is eligible: All full-time, on-campus master’s applicants from Korea; preference is given to  M.S. in Library and Information Science applicants from Korea.

Awardees are granted partial tuition scholarships of 6-12 credit hours per year.

Who is eligible: Full-time, on-campus  M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization applicants.

Awardees are granted partial tuition scholarships of 6-12 credit hours per year.

Each year, the School of Information Studies awards one Helen Benning Regnier Scholarship. This merit-based, full-tuition scholarship is given to an online learning student pursuing a master’s degree in library and information science.

Who is eligible: Online  M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization applicants.

Awardee will be required to provide administrative assistance to the Program Director for 10 hours a week as part of their award. 50% tuition credit per semester.

Who is eligible: Full-time, on-campus  M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization applicants.

The iSchool considers on-campus  M.S. in Library and Information Science and M.S. in Library and Information Science with School Media specialization applicants for the following academic merit awards.
