Co-Curricular Opportunities

The iSchool at Syracuse offers undergraduates several co-curricular opportunities, allowing students to further enrich their academic experiences with advanced coursework and opportunities to apply classroom learning to real-world situations. Click a link below to learn more.

Honors Program

As a School of Information Studies student you can take honors classes taught by the school's faculty or participate in an honors discussion section in one of your Information Studies core courses. The Honors Program challenges academically qualified students to go beyond what is required in their programs of study, encouraging the highest-quality undergraduate scholarship.

As an honors student, you participate in special classes and seminars with students from all of the University's undergraduate colleges. You are challenged every step of the way by rigorous academic standards, but the same professors who demand you live up to your potential also offer you individual encouragement.

In your first two years as an honors student, you take a portion of your coursework in small seminars designed to promote intellectual exploration. These classes are taught by some of the University's best faculty members. In the final two years, you write an undergraduate thesis in your major field of study.

As an honors student, you can benefit from both priority registration for classes and the support of the Honors Program staff, who can guide you to opportunities throughout the University. You also discover the kind of individually engaging education usually found at very small colleges, without sacrificing the diversity available only at large universities.

Study Abroad

Many of our students travel to London and Spain where they take courses in information management and technology and in the liberal arts taught by Syracuse University professors. By planning early you can arrange to take electives or fulfill general academic requirements in any of the University centers. Your interests in studying overseas indicates your awareness that looking beyond the borders of our own country is important for your education. SU Abroad has made travel abroad possible for students for 40 years, so you can be sure that each one of its programs is well designed and organized. All students who study abroad agree it is a highlight of their college years.

As a Syracuse University student you can take part in any of the University's study abroad opportunities offered by  SU Abroad. You can choose from a semester or year in:

  • Chile
  • Czech Republic
  • England
  • France
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Poland
  • Hong Kong
  • Hungary
  • Ireland

Internships

Internships are an option for the student who wishes to integrate classroom skills with real-world work situations. Internships are available to students who have completed at least half of their required iSchool coursework and have a GPA of at least 2.50. For more information on internships, consult Winning with Teamwork: A Guide to Internships and Cooperative Education, which is available from the Office of Career Planning.

Team projects and group oriented class work are common in many iSchool courses. As a result, many students find themselves more engaged in course topics, while at the same time developing and fine tuning their collaboration skills which are an essential asset in modern information technology environments.

The conference was held at the Syracuse Tech Garden and awarded prizes, from cash to legal consultation to iPads. The two Syracuse University students founded Grafighters, an online fighting game where anyone's sketches can come to life, located at the Student Sandbox. Grafighters has been named the Economic Champions of 2009 by the Chamber of Commerce and the two were the winners of the 2009 Sandbox Demo Day. Grafighters also received an Orange Tree Fund award of $12,000.
The Syracuse University Art Collection houses its nearly 45,000 objects in a temperature and humidity controlled area of Sims Hall, adjacent to the Lowe Art Gallery, but many other works, including the Sacco & Vanzetti mosaic by Ben Shahn, decorate the outdoor spaces on the campus.
